The Specialist

This thriller has its moments, but they are few. Luis Llosa is clearly not a very original director - to say the least. The story has some potential, but he only goes for the clichs.
Sylvester Stallone plays the explosives expert Ray Quick who falls in love with a client of his, May Munro (Sharon Stone), who wants him to kill the men who murdered and tortured her parents when she was still a child. What Ray does not know is that May has a second agenda. That involves Ray's arch-enemy, Ned Trent.
Ray Quick and May Munro are cardboard figures so when a romance develops between them, it is just not very credible. It is supposed to be sexy, but it really is not. The other characters are just as clich-ridden: James Woods and Eric Roberts play sadistic psychopaths for the umpteenth time and Rod Steiger shouts and spits his way through the movie in one of his most terrible roles... ever.
