British filmmakers know how to make serious themes palatable to their audience. They just add a touch of that irresistable British humour.
Dawn and Jackie are best friends and sister-in-laws. On a girls' night in town Dawn wins the National Bingo Jackpot. She and Jackie, who always divides the prize between them, are the happy owners of £100,000.
Shortly after Dawn finds out that she suffers from cancer. When Jackie finds out, she books two airplane tickets to Las Vegas, where Dawn has always wanted to go. Now it is girls' night every night.
Julie Walters and Brenda Blethyn are wonderful as the two friends, but Kris Kristofferson's part as the galant cowboy Cody removes the film from its realistic universe, where it is at its best. It is less a film for men than for women.
