Sliding Doors

At the beginning of this romantic comedy drama the main character Helen has just been fired from her job. When she hurries down into the London Underground, the story splits into two parts. In one of the stories Helen catches her train and returns home just in time to find her boyfriend Gerry with his mistress Lydia. Helen leaves him right away. In the other story the train doors slide closed right in front of her. Consequently she does not witness Gerry's infidelity.
The idea of "what if?" is fascinating and forms the basis of the film, because separately the the two plot lines are rather banal. Only when they are intertwined and contrasted do they become interesting. Especially the two endings distinguish this film from the typical mainstream production.
