Entertaining, but overly sentimental story, which takes place in the USA in the 1950s after the Korean War. Jeanne Holman is a war widow who has to raise her two sons, Tom and Gunny, on her own.
One day Jeanne runs the vagabond Jack McCloud over by accident so that he breaks his leg. Feeling guilty Jeanne asks him to stay in her house until the cast can be removed. Gradually the Holman family discover that Jack is very different from their idea of a vagabond.
The magic of the story jars a bit, and the frame story is unnecessary and only emphasizes the sentimental tone of the film.
