Queen Margot

Queen Margot is a colourful and visually powerful historical drama about the feuds between Catholics and Protestants in 16th century France.
In 1972 King Charles IX's 19-year-old promiscuous sister Margot is forced to marry Henri de Navarre, a Protestant. During the wedding celebrations the King's powerful mother, Catherine de Medici, has all the Protestants brutally slaughtered on the night of St. Bartholomew.
Revolted by the bloodshed and the imprisonment of her husband and attracted to a young Protestant Joseph de la Mole, whose life she saves, how can Marot not become involved in this strife?
Queen Margot has evidently been made with only the French audience in mind as Patrice Chéreau hardly bothers to introduce the large number of characters who will be unknown to anyone but the French. It is very confusing at the beginning, but gradually everything begins to fall into place.
